There is now a VMware KB article about this which details the above workaround. Have logged a case with VMware and the fix so far is to disable tg3 netq, as follows: 57200 down to the setting named VMkernel.
Had notification of a new tg3 driver through via VUM on 21st December: What makes you worried that the problem might still occur despite NetQueue being disabled? Broaddom aforementioned NIC models are the most commonly affected but this issue can occur with any NIC that uses the tg3 driver.
